“Trikes”, an exciting new exhibit by Peter Walker is set to be unveiled on June 7th at ARTsPLACE. The popular artist-run gallery is located at 396 St. George Street at Highway 1 in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, CANADA. Entitled “Trikes,” this unique exhibit runs through July 12th. The Opening Reception is scheduled for June 14th, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Peter Walker was born in 1945, London, England and raised in Southern Alberta. He studied at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary from ‘63-’68 and graduated from Vancouver School of Art in 1969. A year later he moved to Atlantic Canada, where he has lived and worked ever since; spending time in Newfoundland and PEI, where he maintained studios. After settling in Nova Scotia, he began teaching at NSCAD in the early 90’s and has maintained a career that spans the disciplines of drawing, painting and steel work.
Of his work, Walker explains: “I let my hand go to the steel that interests me and sort out process and finances later. The steel in this and much of my other work over the last 15 years is a result of the large shears the yard uses to cut the big metal into manageable sizes. The result is beautiful perforations and compound curves, every piece unique. Though I can move back and forth between the sculpture, drawing and painting with ease, the physicality of big steel is fun and challenging with a tinge of danger.”
Peter’s steel source is a big steelyard in Dartmouth, Dartmouth Metals and Bottle Ltd where he states “I am treated well and the inventory is always interesting…Steel yards are my favourite places”.
This exhibition centres on Walker’s work with large steel sculpture. It will feature three pieces, all tricycles. The Trikes were made over a couple of years, the first in 2006.They are fully functional; the third one has bearings on all three wheels.
ARTsPLACE welcomes Peter’s exhibition, and invites all to the opening reception on Jubne 14th.
